Lapageria rosea

The Chilean bell flower is a stunning evergreen, twining climber and is the national flower of its native Chile where it is known as the copihue. It is highly sought after and prized for its gorgeous long bell-like flowers which appear during the summer and autumn. These are usually red but more rarely appear as white or patterned. Established plants are frost hardy to about -5șC and can reach 15 feet (5m).

Lapageria rosea is now extremely rare in the wild, where it is found in the temperate rain forest in considerable shade in moist, deep valleys. Therefore they must have a semi-shaded position in the garden or cold greenhouse where it should be grown in moist, humus-rich but well-drained acid soil.

Plants will need support by wines or a cane or two around which vigorous shoots will twine and can be encouraged to grow up into trees. Established plants can send vigorous shoots from the base reaching 10-15 feet (5m) in a season.

A slow-release or organic fertiliser can be applied in the spring or bonemeal in the autumn. Watch out for slug damage as these are the main pest but vine weevil can also be present and mealy bug can be a serious pest on greenhouse plants.

These plants are raised from seed and flower as the red clone although very occasionally they turn out to be the much rarer white form.

"With boundless wealth in plant material at our command we may enjoy quality and quantity, and the best costs no more to grow than that of inferior merit. Granted it is more difficult to obtain but there is sport in hunting down and securing trophies".
