Camellia × williamsii 'Mildred Veitch'
The very last hybrid to come out of the famous Veitch Nurseries was this lovely camellia. This ericaceous evergreen shrub is easy to grow but rather slow-growing. It will perform well in a pot or in the garden and should be planted in lime-free soil and protected from morning sun. Pot-grown plants should be fed during the growing season using a good general fertiliser and be kept well watered in the hot late summer months as this is when the following year’s flower buds are formed.
This camellia was bred by Mr Lowman, the Nursery Foreman at Robert Veitch & Son, Alphington, Exeter in 1947 by crossing Camellia saluensis and C. japonica 'Elegans'. The result was one seed-pod containing five seeds. All five seeds germinated which were numbered and left to grow on for many years before the company decided to look at this plant as a possible introduction. It has a compact upright habit and large, semi-double to anemone form loose flowers of orchid-pink. It was brought into cultivation in 1962 and named after Miss Mildred Veitch the then Managing Director of the Exeter firm.
The Royal Horticultural Society gave it an Award of Garden Merit in 1967. Two years later, Miss A.M. Veitch B.A. died after a long illness. In 1979, the Royal Horticultural Society also gave Camellia × williamsii 'Mildred Veitch' a First Class Certificate.

"With boundless wealth in plant material at our command we may enjoy quality
and quantity, and the best costs no more to grow than that of inferior merit. Granted
it is more difficult to obtain but there is sport in hunting down and securing trophies".
