Hardiness Guide
Red: greenhouse plant
Amber: semi-hardy in the U.K.
Green: fully hardy in the U.K.

Some plants have two different traffic lights next to them as may fall into two catagories of hardiness depending where in Britain they are grown.

Key:

(m/f) = male and female plants
(v) = Variegated
N.B. Dates of introduction relate to dates plants were introduced to Britain as can be best ascertained. Some sources are ambiguous in their proposed dates of introduction, so on further investigation, sometimes I may update this information.

Monkey Puzzle
Conifer
Evergreen

Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
The Monkey Puzzle was discovered and introduced from Chile by Archibald Menzies in 1795. It was difficult to obtain seed until William Lobb finally sent a large batch of seeds to his employer's nursery, James Veitch in Exeter, in 1844, from which the tree was brought into general cultivation. A curious evergreen conifer with strong whorls of spiny leaves. Trees are slow growing in the first ten years, reaching 6-10ft before growing away more speedily thereafter. For the first few decades the tree produces a neat conical form before it's lower branches gradually drop and the tree extends to a height of 60ft or more over a 100-year period or so.

The Patagonian Holly
Shrub
Evergreen
Prefers an acid soil
Amber: semi-hardy in the U.K.
A beautiful, dwarf evergreen shrub with leaves that resemble a holly bush, hence the name. However, quite unlike any holly this modest looking shrub starts producing the most exotic looking long tubular orange-red and yellow shiny flowers during the late summer and autumn. It is a woodland plant and so prefers a shady site in slightly acid soil which is humus-rich and needs shelter from severe weather. Therefore, it will only grow outside in sheltered gardens in wilder districts and for most gardens it will be best grown in a pot and given winter protection.

Pagoda Bush
Shrub
Deciduous
Needs an acid soil
Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
This strong growing deciduous shrub provides great colour value in the garden by two seasons of interest. Firstly, in the spring, clusters of lily-of-the-valley-like flowers appear which are bronzy-pink in colour and are framed by the new green foliage. Secondly, during the autumn, the leaves turn bright yellow, orange, scarlet and red to form one of the most striking displays of autumn colour of any hardy shrub (*see comment at bottom of page). The Pagoda Bush is a tough plant and a good steady grower, finally forming a large, rounded shrub or small tree of 10 feet or more (3.5m) in height and spread. It must be grown in an acid soil.

Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
An upright growing evergreen shrub with glossy, slightly curvy foliage. This makes an excellent specimen plant in the border or a neat hedge as unlike many other escallonias, E. 'Iveyi' is narrower in habit and therefore uses less valuable space in a small garden. White tubular flowers are produced during the summer in clusters. Eventual height 6-8 feet (2-2.5m) and spread 4 feet (1.2m), although it can be easily kept at half this size. Not fully hardy in the coldest parts of U.K., hence the amber and green rating.

Kolkwitzia amabilis. Copyright © Caradoc Doy Kolkwitzia amabilis
Beauty Bush
Shrub
Deciduous
Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
"This is the most beautiful of all the flowering shrubs of the Northern Hemisphere", according to Mr. Ernest Wilson, the great plant collector. And it is Wilson we have to thank for this beauty in our gardens as he introduced in from China in the early 1900s. Kolkwitzia amabilis was once well-known and became a popular shrub during the 1940s and '50s. Since then it has been in a steady to rapid decline in our gardens which is a great shame, although other forms are seen occasionally. Closed related to the abelias, it is a very hardy deciduous shrub which will reward you with an abundance of yellow-throated, pink tubular flowers in mid spring. The foliage starts off with a bronze appearance before changing to green. Plants can reach 6-8 feet (2-2.5m) in as many years but with only a light trimming after flowering, it can be easily kept to half this size. Plant in an open, well-drained site.

Lapageria rosea
The Copihue or Chilean Bell Flower
Climbing Plant
Evergreen
Amber: semi-hardy in the U.K.
This flowering evergreen is the national flower of its native Chile and one of the most beautiful climbing plants. It needs a shady place in soil with a high humus content which will not dry out. The flowers appear in the late summer and can continue until the spring in favourable locations, with plants eventually reaching 10-15 feet (3-5 metres). The Lapageria prefers a slightly acidic soil and are best grown outdoors in only the mildest districts. Protect plants from slugs, particularly on young plants. These plants are raised from seed and flower as the red clone although very occasionally they turn out to be the much rarer white form.

Japanese Larch
Coniferous Tree

The Japanese Larch is one of the deciduous conifers which will grow to form a medium sized upright tree of 60 to 80 feet (20-40m). However, this does not mean it cannot make a fine specimen growing happily in a pot for many years first. The small needles appear in the early spring in delicate, bright green alternate tufts. Later in the season, even on trees of only a few years old, small fruit appear which develop into a small rounded cones. A popular species used in bonsai work.

Ligularia wilsonianus
Herbaceous Perennial
Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
This is a vigorous hardy, herbaceous perennial with large, rounded leaves. Lilium duchartrei
Bulbous plant
Green: fully hardy in the U.K.
This pretty lily produces a small but striking, white Turk's cap-like flower with crimson-red speckling and a powerful fragrance during the summer. It is a rare bulb in cultivation and grows in moist and even some marshy places in a few remote parts of Western China on moist hillsides and the edges of forests. Flower stems reach 18" to 4 feet in height (45cm to 1.2m). Grow in moist, peat-free but humus-rich soil in the shade or semi-shade. Avoid over feeding as this will raise weak plants.

Flowering size bulb £9.95. (This lily produces small bulbs)

One of the finest lilies in cultivation. This splendid, large-flowering bulbous plant is extremely hardy and produces strong upright shoots up to 4 feet (1.2m) tall which hold the dramatic display of white, pink-edged and highly fragrant flowers in mid summer. They last well in the garden or can be easily cut for the house. Grow in an open, sunny position with excellent drainage and avoid moving lilies once they are established. Use a peat-free planting medium and avoid over feeding as this will raise weak plants.

Flowering size bulb £4.95.

*Autumn Colour
The most spectacular displays of autumn colour appear in dry autumnal weather where the appropriate plants are grown in well-drained soils. However, the display of leaf colour is generally short-lived as the process of sugar conversion which takes place in the plants' leaves to create this display, is accelerated by the dryness. For this reason, many gardeners over the years have deliberately chosen damper or slightly shaded sites to grow these plants in order to slow down this process and create an extended display. The downside of this being that the colour produced is not as dramatic. So, choose your site carefully when planning planting for a display of autumn foliage colour.
