If you live locally, then maybe you would like to visit my plant shop at Busy Lizzie's Craft & Plant Shop in Newton Poppleford where my plants are available for sale. The shop is easy to find; if you are coming from Exeter, follow the A3052 for Sidmouth and we are exactly 1 mile past The Half Way House Inn on the left. We share the same site as Poppleford's Restaurant. If you are arriving from the Sidmouth direction on the A3052, go through the village of Newton Poppleford and turn right towards Exeter at the mini roundabout. If you are coming from Budleigh Salterton, turn left at the mini roundabout. We are exactly 1 mile up the hill from the mini roundabout in the village. To find Newton Poppleford, click here.

A shade-tolerant conifer which was discovered and introduced by Charles Maries whist collecting for James Veitch & Sons, Chelsea in Japan in 1879. It comes from the cool, moist forests where it can be found at 5,000-9,000ft (1,500-2,800m).

Acacia 'Exeter Hybrid'

Amber: semi-hardy in the U.K. This beautiful small tree was raised by accident at the Robert Veitch & Son Nurseries in Exeter sometime before 1900 and what a lovely accident it was! Although not a completely hardy tree outside in most parts of the U.K., it will make a graceful tree outside in sheltered parts of the Southwest or kept trimmed as a compact conservatory plant and you will be rewarded with an abundance of pale yellow, fragrant flowers during the spring.

The deciduous Snake Bark Maple was discovered in China by Charles Maries in 1879. It is distinctive for its very ornamental stripy, snake-like bark. It is a small to medium sized tree, eventually reaching 15-50ft 5-15m).

This beatiful small and slow-growing tree is notable because of its distinctive cinnamon peeling bark. Another of Ernest H. Wilson's important introductions from China in 1901. Although it is now endangered in the wild, it is widely grown in gardens, therefore providing a safe haven for possible future re-introduction to its native habitat.

An important introduction by the young plant collector, Ernest Wilson from China in 1900. Its delicious fruit have been heavily marketed to become one of the most important export crops from New Zealand. It is a very vigorous, deciduous climber requiring plenty of space to produce fruit by late summer. Plants are male or female and both are required for successful pollination. This is a self-fertile clone.

A colourful climbing plant whose foliage gradually appears pink, green and cream during the spring and summer giving an attractive 'painted' effect, before the foliage gradually turns more green. Best against a wall in part shade or full sun. Height and spread 20ft (6m).

The Monkey Puzzle was discovered and introduced from Chile by Archibald Menzies in 1795. It was difficult to obtain seed until William Lobb finally sent a large batch of seeds to his employer's nursery, James Veitch, in 1844, from which the tree was brought into general cultivation. A curious evergreen conifer with strong whorls of spiny leaves. Trees are slow growing in the first ten years, reaching 6-10ft before growing away more speedily thereafter. For the first few decades the tree produces a neat conical form before gradually dropping its lower branches and extending into a tall tree of 60ft or more over a 100 year period or so.

A strong-growing perennial for the back of the border, reaching 5ft (1.5m). Produces white flower plumes in summer which stay in silvery bud until autumn when they finally open white. Will grow well in full sun or quite a shady position. Not widely grown.

A steady-growing large evergreen shrub for a sheltered part of the garden with pretty curly leaves giving a fan-shape appearance en mass. Small pale yellow flowers appear in January and February with a delicate vanilla fragrance. Best in full sun. Not widely grown.
