If you live locally, then maybe you would like to visit my plant shop at Busy Lizzie's Craft & Plant Shop in Newton Poppleford where my plants are available for sale. The shop is easy to find; if you are coming from Exeter, follow the A3052 for Sidmouth and we are exactly 1 mile past The Half Way House Inn on the left. We share the same site as Poppleford's Restaurant. If you are arriving from the Sidmouth direction on the A3052, go through the village of Newton Poppleford and turn right towards Exeter at the mini roundabout. If you are coming from Budleigh, turn left at the mini roundabout. We are exactly 1 mile up the hill from the mini roundabout in the village. To find Newton Poppleford, click here.
Our current opening hours are 10.0am to 4.0pm Tuesday to Sunday, we are closed on Monday for the winter months.

European Olive Tree
Olea europaea 'Cipressino' 30-45cm tall bush .
This tough, strong-growing variety of Europaean Olive is widely used by commercial olive growers for its fruit and oil. It has narrow green leaves and an upright habit and needs another olive nearby for good pollination. Flowers appear in late spring or early summer followed by small fruits which ripen to black in milder districts, with a 15% oil content.

This is a slow-growing, small leaved variety of European Olive which makes it suitable for growing in a conservatory as most other varieties will grow far too quickly indoors. It has green, rather than silvery-green leaves which are light green when young and mature to dark green. It is a tough variety and happy outdoors too providing it is growing in a sunny, sheltered site with excellent drainage.

In addition, I have been growing a variety of European Olive, Olea europaea 'Peace', outdoors in Britain since the 1990's and can now offer young trees by post. This is the toughest of all the varieties I grow and grows vigorously. Established plants in the ground can grow 3 feet (1m) per year. It is suitable for growing in the ground or in a container. You will find that it behaves quite differently depending on which you choose. In the ground, like most plants, it will grow faster and produce a small to medium-sized tree in ten years. In a pot, its growth will be contained and can be easily kept to a 3-4 foot bush (1-1.2m) at ten years old.

I often see flowers and occassional fruit on plants as young as a year old. Whether the fruits will ripen depends very much on how good the season turns out to be. However, achieving fruit should, in my view, be treated as a bonus and not something to expect every year. The jury is 'still out' on whether the British Isles is suitable for commercial olive production. On the Mediterraean, it takes ten months for the fruit to ripen, in Britain it will take longer. Incidentally, the oldest olive tree in the UK is the one growing at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London which is now nearly 100 years old and produces fruit in good summers.

Trees are carefully packed and sent by carrier or first class post for fast delivery. A delivery service is available for local orders charged at cost (£1 per mile) from Topsham. (So, if the delivery is 10 miles from Topsham, the total delivery cost will be £10).

High quality olive feed as used by professional olive farms.
This liquid feed has not only the major nutrients (N:P:K:) which are essential for plant growth, but unlike most of the feeds available for amateurs, it also contains a wide range of minor nutrients which are also essential for healthy plant growth, particularly fruiting evergreens, such as olives. In addition, this liquid fertiliser includes important trace elements and seaweed extract to maintain healthy plants and to help speed up the berry ripening process. This aid is particularly important in temperate climates, such as the U.K. due to the reduced amount of summer sunlight. Dilute 1:100 and use every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season (spring to autumn). Also suitable as a general fertilizer for other plants and shrubs.

Plant an Olive in Remembrance

It can be difficult to know how to help those suffering a bereavement. Often, a plant is chosen as a memorial and an olive tree is a good choice. Choose a message of sympathy when ordering and I will gladly add this to the tree when being packed.

An interesting initiave is Peace Oil which is produced in Israel by Jews, Arabs, Druze and Bedouin working together. The award-winning extra virgin olive oil produced is being sold to encourage co-operation between communities. Profits from Peace Oil are being used to support peace and reconciliation work in the Middle East.
